Ants
Most ants perfer to nest outside in an
undisturbed location. They need certain climate factors in order to
survive, such as a food source, a place to build, and good weather
conditions. Fire ants and leaf cutter ants are the only ones that
will build a visible mound in your yard. So that means the other
types will inhabit in hollowed moist wood, like tree stumps, mulch
in flower beds, and fence posts. However, these persistent
creatures can build in sound wood under homes and in walls. Nests
are usually found where water leakage can occur like around
bathtubs, sinks, roof leaks, poorly flashed chimneys, or poorly
sealed windows and door frames. It is important to perform through
inspections of your home and repair any and all holes and cracks
that might lead outdoors. When inspecting look for any possible
food sources for the ants. Any wood is a potential colony for
ants, firewood needs to be stacked away from the home, and elevated
off the ground if possible. Leaf piles, mulch beds, and pine straw
are also an ant favorite. Regular maintenance in the yard including
trimming bushes/hedges, trees (anything that can serve as a bridge
to your structure), cleaning out gutters, raking and disposing of
leaves and pine straw are essential to maintaining an ant free
home. After the inspection is performed and the ants are located
then proper control measures will be taken in order to eliminate
them from your home.
